Golf analyst Brandel Chamblee has pointed out that Scottie Scheffler’s current scoring average surpasses even Tiger Woods’ peak performance on the PGA Tour, emphasizing this comparison on August 18, 2025. Chamblee underscored that although Tiger Woods led the PGA Tour in scoring average nine times during his career, Scheffler’s present scoring record is better than Woods’ best in all but two seasons.
The focus on scoring averages reveals that Scheffler, currently averaging 68.110 strokes per round, is outperforming most of his competitors on tour. His lead is impressive, nearly one shot better per round than second-place Rory McIlroy.
“Tiger Woods led the PGA Tour in scoring average nine times, but in only two years (2000 and 2007) did Tiger Woods have a lower scoring average than Scheffler has right now,” Chamblee wrote.
“Scheffler is averaging 68.110 per round, almost a full shot better than Mcilroy who is 2nd in scoring.”
Challenges of Leading the FedExCup Before Tour Championship
Later the same day, Chamblee reflected on the difficulty of maintaining the FedExCup lead going into the Tour Championship, held at East Lake Golf Club. He explained that carrying the FedExCup lead into the final event is comparable to having a 54-hole lead in a regular PGA Tour event, which frequently unsettles players due to the pressure involved. The stakes and prize money appear to affect many leaders negatively, leading to underperformance.
“Leading the FedExCup going into the Tour Championship has effectively been like having the 54 hole lead in a @PGATOUR event, in that it has put players off their games. Or maybe the enormous amount of money at stake is hard to put out of one’s mind, either way, on average, the leader underperforms at East Lake.”
Since the FedExCup Playoffs began in 2007, only one player has managed to lead entering the Tour Championship and also record the lowest score throughout the event. That player was Tiger Woods in 2007, who sealed victory with a remarkable 257 total, winning by eight strokes, underlining the rarity of such dominance.

Chamblee Addresses Phil Mickelson’s Past Comments on Scheffler After BMW Championship
Scottie Scheffler secured a significant win at the 2025 BMW Championship on August 17, capturing his second FedExCup Playoff title this season and moving up to No. 1 in the world rankings. He finished two strokes ahead of Robert MacIntyre, further solidifying his outstanding form in 2025.
Following this victory, Chamblee responded to a fan’s social media comment about an earlier critical remark from Phil Mickelson regarding Scheffler’s chances in 2025. The fan questioned if Mickelson’s take was one of the poorest predictions ever made in golf.
“Was Phil’s take on Scottie this year arguably the worst golf take of all time? Can’t think of a worse one.”
Chamblee’s reply was succinct but telling:
“Phil was always bold.”
In March 2025, Mickelson expressed doubt about Scheffler’s potential to win before the Ryder Cup, stating:
“Here’s a hot take Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don’t think so.”
This forecast has proved inaccurate, as Scheffler has already claimed five PGA Tour titles in 2025, including premier events such as the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, the PGA Championship, the Memorial Tournament, the Open Championship, and the BMW Championship.
Scheffler’s 2025 Season Shows Consistent Top-Level Performance
Throughout 2025, Scottie Scheffler has demonstrated remarkable consistency. His year began with top-10 finishes at multiple tournaments, including a tie for ninth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a tie for 25th at the WM Phoenix Open, and a third-place finish at the Genesis Invitational. He also narrowly missed victory at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, finishing second.
Overall, Scheffler has competed in 18 events, placing inside the top 10 in 15 of them, confirming his status as one of the most reliable and dominant players on the PGA Tour this year.
