José Alvarado Returns to Phillies After 80-Game Suspension, Boosting Bullpen Depth Ahead of Playoffs

The Philadelphia Phillies have reinstated left-handed reliever José Alvarado to their active roster after he completed an 80-game suspension. Alvarado, suspended for testing positive for exogenous testosterone in May, will not be eligible for postseason play but is ready to rejoin manager Rob Thomson’s bullpen starting Tuesday night against the Seattle Mariners.

Roster Adjustments to Accommodate Return

To make room for Alvarado, the Phillies optioned right-handed pitcher Nolan Hoffman to Triple-A and designated lefty Josh Walker for assignment, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster. These moves reflect the team’s focus on strengthening relief pitching depth as the playoffs approach.

Alvarado’s Performance Before Suspension

Before the suspension, 30-year-old José Alvarado recorded a 2.70 ERA and a 6.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 20 appearances, along with seven saves, including his latest outing. Over his nine-year career, he has maintained a 123 ERA+ and a 2.41 strikeout-to-walk ratio, highlighting his consistent effectiveness on the mound.

Phillies’ Pitching Challenges and Recent Moves

The Phillies have experienced notable roster activity recently, welcoming back right-hander Aaron Nola to the rotation while placing ace Zack Wheeler on the injured list due to a blood clot near his right shoulder. The team has yet to provide an estimate for Wheeler’s return, making Alvarado’s presence increasingly valuable.

Current Standings and Bullpen Strategy

With a 72-53 record, the Phillies lead the National League East by 5½ games over the New York Mets. Having acquired closer Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline, and given Alvarado’s ineligibility for playoffs, Duran is expected to carry most of the save duties moving forward. Alvarado’s return, however, offers additional depth and flexibility to the bullpen as the postseason approaches.
