Alex Ovechkin, the celebrated hockey player, recently faced an unusual setback when his Russian bank accounts were blocked due to his accountant’s failure to file tax returns on time since 2023. This complication, reported to have occurred intermittently over the past two years, is said to be a procedural issue rather than related to any outstanding debt.
According to Mash on Sports, the Russian tax authorities have blocked Ovechkin’s accounts multiple times since 2023. The restrictions occurred twice in 2023, twice in 2024, and most recently at the end of July 2025.
“The hockey legend forgot about his individual entrepreneur and has not sent declarations since 2023. After that, the tax service systematically blocked all of his accounts: two in 2023, two more in 2024, and one very recently – at the end of July 2025,” the outlet wrote.
Match TV further investigated the situation, quoting a source close to the Capitals’ captain, who reassured that this problem is not related to any debts but purely an administrative delay.
“There are no problems, no debt either. But the accountant did not submit the report on time, so the account was blocked. This issue will be closed soon,” the source told Match TV.
Recent Career Highlights of Alex Ovechkin
This account issue comes only a few months after Ovechkin made headlines by breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal-scoring record. On April 6, while playing the Washington Capitals against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena, he scored his 895th career goal during a power play in the second period, assisted by teammate Tom Wilson.
Despite being 39 years old, Ovechkin remains a key figure for the Capitals. In the 2024-25 NHL season, he recorded 44 goals and 29 assists, finishing with 73 points and a +15 plus/minus rating. His goal total was tied for third highest in the league. However, his playoff performance was less impressive, managing only five goals and one assist in 10 games.

Dynamo Moscow’s Tribute to Ovechkin’s Record Achievement
Dynamo Moscow is set to honor Alex Ovechkin at an event scheduled for Friday at VTB Arena, inviting fans to collect passes earlier in the week to attend. The club expressed their excitement about celebrating the hockey legend‘s milestone, marking his record-breaking 895th goal.
“Already this Friday, at 16:00, together with you we will honor the legendary hockey player and celebrated dynamologist – Alexander Ovechkin 895,” Dynamo Moscow wrote on Instagram.
Ovechkin concluded the 2024-25 season with a total of 897 goals, including his final goal scored on April 18 against Pittsburgh. Since being the number one draft pick in 2004, he has remained a pivotal leader for the Capitals.
The issue with his tax accounts in Russia appears to be temporary, with expectations that it will soon be resolved. Ovechkin is likely to shift his focus back to his hockey career as he continues to lead Washington in the coming seasons.
