Connor Zilisch has been medically cleared to compete in Friday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway, driving the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, the team confirmed Thursday. The 19-year-old points leader returns after recovering from a broken collarbone sustained at Watkins Glen International.
Details of Zilisch’s Injury and Treatment
Zilisch injured his collarbone following a fall in Victory Lane after winning the Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen. He was promptly hospitalized but released the same night. On August 12, Zilisch underwent surgery in which doctors placed a plate and screws to stabilize the collarbone and promote proper healing.
Maintaining the Points Lead and Contingency Plan
Friday’s race is the first event since Watkins Glen, ensuring Zilisch will not miss any competitions despite his injury. He holds a seven-point advantage over teammate Justin Allgaier as they contest the Regular Season Championship. To cover any unexpected issues, Parker Kligerman, a three-time winner in the Craftsman Truck Series, is on standby to substitute if needed. According to the rules, as long as Zilisch starts the race, he will receive the points earned regardless of whether another driver finishes the event.
Zilisch’s Racing History This Season and Upcoming Events
Earlier this season, Zilisch missed a race at Texas Motor Speedway due to a back injury from a crash at Talladega Superspeedway. During that event, Kyle Larson replaced him and drove the No. 88 Chevrolet to victory. With only three races remaining in the regular season—including Daytona, Portland International Raceway, and World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway—Zilisch is aiming to maintain his lead heading into the playoffs.
