The San Francisco Giants suffered a major setback in their playoff aspirations when Landen Roupp, the team’s emerging No. 3 starting pitcher, was sidelined with a left knee sprain during Wednesday’s 8-1 defeat against the San Diego Padres. Roupp, who had just returned from the injured list following elbow inflammation, was carted off the field after being hit by a comebacker, dealing a difficult blow to the Giants’ pitching staff.
Before the injury, Roupp had been a stabilizing force in the Giants’ rotation, recording a 3.80 ERA over a career-high 106 2/3 innings across 22 starts this season. His presence alongside Logan Webb and Robbie Ray gave San Francisco a reliable three-man pitching core.
Challenges Mount as Giants’ Rotation Depth Is Tested
The Giants’ pitching staff has quietly performed well this year, ranking fifth in Major League Baseball with a collective 3.72 ERA over more than 1,100 innings. However, with Roupp out indefinitely, the rotation faces significant uncertainty, and potential internal replacements offer little reassurance.
Blade Tidwell, acquired from the New York Mets in the Tyler Rogers trade, had been close to returning to the majors after a strong start to his Triple-A season, posting a 1.69 ERA in his first three outings with Sacramento. Unfortunately, Tidwell experienced shoulder discomfort during a bullpen session this week, and with MRI results pending, his availability for the stretch run is in question.

Examining Possible Options Within the Organization
With Tidwell’s status unclear, the Giants have looked toward two other pitchers on their 40-man roster at Triple-A Sacramento: Hayden Birdsong and Carson Whisenhunt. Birdsong has shown promise earlier this season in relief and spot starts, but command issues have hindered his ability to stick with the major league team. His recent Triple-A performance includes walking five batters over three innings, and his 5.59 ERA since being demoted in late July suggests he may not yet be ready to shoulder the pressure of a pennant race.
Carson Whisenhunt has made his major league debut but has displayed inconsistency. In three starts, only one has been strong enough to build confidence, making the Giants reluctant to rely heavily on him during crucial games in August and September. Another name to consider is Carson Seymour, who has experience as a multi-inning reliever but lacks starting experience. Trevor McDonald, also on the 40-man roster, has shown uneven results at Triple-A Sacramento and presents another uncertain option.
Rotation Stability at a Critical Juncture for the Giants
None of the internal arms available offer firm assurance as a dependable replacement for Roupp at this point. The Giants’ pitching depth has been stretched thin throughout the season, and Roupp’s injury now pushes them to the brink. The front office may face difficult decisions, such as leaning on bullpen games, risking a struggling prospect, or actively pursuing reinforcements via trade to maintain competitiveness.
Roupp’s rise as a consistent mid-rotation starter was one of the most positive developments for San Francisco this year. His absence highlights the fragile state of the Giants’ rotation as they strive toward the postseason, where one more injury could derail their chances.
