Luka Doncic Leads Slovenia as Sole NBA Star Ahead of EuroBasket 2025 Showdown Against Serbia

Luka Doncic will spearhead Slovenia in their final warm-up contest before EuroBasket 2025, facing a strong Serbian team packed with NBA talent. Slovenia recently earned a 93-81 friendly win over Great Britain, with Doncic delivering an impressive 28 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds.

As the team’s only NBA player and most accomplished basketball figure, Doncic has carried much of the responsibility during preparations. With former Denver Nuggets forward Vlatko Cancar opting out of the tournament after signing with EuroLeague’s Olimpia Milano, Doncic remains Slovenia’s sole NBA representative.

Beyond Doncic, Slovenia’s roster features seasoned international competitors such as Klemen Prepelic, who gained recognition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Following the Serbia matchup, Slovenia will open their EuroBasket group stage on August 28, competing against Poland, France, Belgium, Iceland, and Israel.

Stephen A. Smith Supports Luka Doncic’s EuroBasket Participation Despite Injury Risks

Doncic suffered a knee contusion in a friendly game against Latvia, raising concerns among fans; however, he returned to nearly achieve a triple-double versus Great Britain. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith views Doncic’s involvement in EuroBasket as positive for his conditioning and readiness ahead of his first complete season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“He’s out there trying to work himself into the best shape that he’s ever been in his life, so if this is how he chooses to do it, I don’t knock him one bit,” Smith said (per Clutch Points).

Smith also commended Doncic’s commitment to representing his national team, noting a contrast between international players‘ dedication and what he perceives among many American athletes.

“I think it’s important to remind everybody of what international players should be applauded for, which is something we lament with the American players: their level of dedication to their nation, wanting to represent their country,” Smith said.

“As often as they play in international competition, this is very, very important to them because their native citizens hold them accountable. This stuff matters to those folks.”

Luka Doncic’s Offseason Focus and Future Outlook with the Lakers

This summer, Doncic has concentrated heavily on improving his conditioning, shedding weight, and enhancing his fitness after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks. The Los Angeles Lakers recently secured his services through a $165 million contract extension, signaling their confidence in his health and performance for the 2025-26 NBA season, which begins in October.

Doncic’s role as Slovenia’s leading figure heading into EuroBasket 2025 highlights the importance of his preparation and leadership. His performance against Serbia will offer a crucial gauge of his form before tournament play unfolds, as Slovenia aims to advance in a challenging group that includes several strong European teams.
