Aryna Sabalenka supports Coco Gauff's coaching change, reflecting on her positive experience with biomechanical expert Gavin MacMillan.
Aryna Sabalenka, currently the World No. 1, has publicly expressed her support for Coco Gauff‘s significant coaching shift just days before the 2025 US Open begins in Flushing Meadows, New York. Sabalenka connected with reporters to share reflections on her own journey working with Gavin MacMillan, the same biomechanical expert recently added to Gauff’s coaching team, offering encouraging words for the American star’s fresh approach.
The Background of Gauff’s Coaching Rearrangement and Its Links to Sabalenka’s Story
Coco Gauff’s split with coach Matt Daly shortly before the season’s final Grand Slam surprised many in the tennis community. Daly had been coaching her since September 2024 after her earlier separation from Brad Gilbert, contributing to key achievements including Gauff’s first WTA Finals title and her second Major victory at Roland Garros this year. Despite these successes, recent disappointments in Wimbledon and other preparatory tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati prompted the end of their collaboration.
Gauff now plans to continue her partnership with longtime coach Jean-Christophe Faurel while incorporating Gavin MacMillan into her support staff. MacMillan previously played a pivotal role in helping Sabalenka during a critical period when she struggled with her serve, especially battling persistent double faults.
Sabalenka Reflects on MacMillan’s Impact During Difficult Times
Speaking at the US Open pre-tournament press event, Sabalenka praised MacMillan’s crucial influence on her career turnaround.

“I’m really grateful for his help during really tough times. He really helped me with the serve. I really appreciate him for everything,”
she said.
She explained how quickly the improvements took effect:
“Everyone is different. I was really desperate for changes, and ready to change my serve and to get better and to finally get back on track with my serve. So for me, it was basically, like, couple of weeks, and I was sort of fixed.”
Closing her comments with best wishes for Gauff and her team, Sabalenka expressed:
“But everyone is different, and I wish them both the very best and hopefully everything can work out well for them.”
Upcoming US Open Matches and Sabalenka’s Title Defense
Sabalenka is set to compete in Flushing Meadows for the eighth time, entering the tournament as the top seed and reigning champion. Her first-round opponent will be Rebeka Masarova. This matchup will mark only their second meeting on the WTA Tour, with Sabalenka winning their initial encounter in straight sets during the second round of the 2025 Berlin Open.
The winner of their opening match will advance to face either Polina Kudermetova or Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the following round, continuing the tournament’s competitive progression.
Significance of the Coaching Change and Its Potential Impact
Gauff’s decision to restructure her coaching team, particularly by integrating a specialist like MacMillan, mirrors a strategy Sabalenka found effective during a challenging phase in her career. Given Sabalenka’s endorsement and shared experience, this coaching adjustment could be a turning point for Gauff as she aims to regain momentum in majortournaments. Their evolving rivalry and professional journeys will be closely watched during the US Open and beyond.
